Description (anglais) : A large crowd stormed after three officers from the royal salt warehouse who sought refuge into the hôtel de ville. The crowd was afraid that the authorities were going to raise the price of salt. About 4 p.m. the crowd threatened to attack the house of a receiver in the salt warhouse, but was repulsed by several judicial officers along with the neighbours. Later, they assembled in the rue des Buchettes. A lot of children were seen next to the hôtel de ville throwing rocks to Louis Berthauld's house, and trying to enter, saying ‘they should kill, kill, the gabeleurs and all those who would defend them’. The urban militia captains failed to assemble their companies because thei men said ‘their intention was to take arms in the service of the king, but not on this occasion to defend gabeleurs, and that they intended to stay in their houses to guard them.’ The crowd continued to grow.
